Penny Cleare, President

Penny Cleare is founding director and president of MarketSpend, a company specializing in capturing maximum value and efficiencies from company’s value chain, suppliers and third party spend. MarketSpend collaborates with corporate sourcing organizations on customized business strategy planning, opportunity & value analysis, spend optimization and holistic Strategic Category Management. Prior to forming MarketSpend in August 2005, Ms. Cleare held the role of Managing Director/Co-Founder at TranSpend and Vice President at QP Group, both strategic sourcing consultancies.

Penny has 20+ years of experience in sourcing in the consulting, corporate and agency environments in biotechnology, biopharma, pharmaceutical, life science, telecommunications, consumer goods, beverage, food, financial and business-to- business industries.  At MarketSpend, Penny has worked closely with sourcing leadership and teams on transforming the organizations and embedding the Category Management process. She has conducted a number of Opportunity Analyses on corporate third party spend that resulted in strategic business plans and prioritized projects. She and her team have facilitated many Category Management initiatives collaboratively with internal Category Leads or in Interim Category Manager roles. In addition, she developed the training material and conducted a series of workshops for the Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) and large to mid-size agencies on negotiating in a procurement influenced environment.

Within the corporate arena, Penny was Director, Marketing Services at Vlasic Foods International, a spin-off of Campbell’s Food Company. Before Vlasic, she was Director, Merchandising Services at International Distillers and Vintners (IDV), where she successfully developed a cross-functional department responsible for agency quality and process management, procurement, production, logistics and warehousing of all promotional materials, delivering 10+% annualized savings, while supporting over 40 brands.  She was involved in the process and procedure redesigns and staffing integration associated with IDV’s merger and acquisition activities resulting from the consolidation of the IDV divisions, Heublein and Paddington, and the subsequent merger of Grand Metropolitan and United Distillers into the formation of United Distillers and Vintners (UDV), a division of Diageo.

Earlier in her career, Penny held various positions within advertising and promotion agencies, including Partner, Vice President Operations, Account Supervisor and Production Manager. She has worked on many global brands, such as Cadbury Schweppes, Sunkist, Smirnoff, Jose Cuervo, Black Velvet, Christian Brothers, McDonald’s, Stanley Tools, Subway, International Mailing Systems, Hitchcock Furniture and regional financial institutions, amongst many others.
